My beloved "Canary" performance gown, made in 2010 by Mister Pearl. He and I nick-named it “The Canary" or the "Triple M" gown because it's based on three favorite (and somewhat similar) dresses worn by three of our icons of glamour: Marlene, Marilyn and Mae. At the time we had the hots for the new #Swarovski Jonquil color, so that became our inspiration with additional Jonquil Aurora Borealis, Light Peach, Silk & clear crystal mixed in. There are lots of fancy cut deep-faceted pear shaped & oval jewels in settings sewn over the yellow embroidery, with strings of @Swarovski crystal beads that fly around with movement and create an incredible sound! Even the underarms are beautifully hand-beaded with dangling crystals, and the ultra-fine sheer mesh is crystallized further with tiny little rhinestones. The back has a long beaded zipper pull which I always request to have added to my costumes; I had it done here & again recently on my @zuhairmuradofficial gown. I work very closely with the designers during the process of making new costumes; this one involved dozens of fittings over the course of the two years that it was being made in Paris by Mr. Pearl himself, and then his small team began working on the final beadwork. I'd go to fittings at his beautiful little 17th century apartment just steps from Notre Dame. He preferred working nights by candlelight with classical music playing. The crystallized walking stick, another tribute to Mae West, was made under my direction in Hollywood, as were special heavy duty road cases that house the entire costume. This dress is too heavy to hang on a hanger, so we had a velvet lined case made for it to lie flat in, with compartments for each costume piece. The corset underneath the gown is made in Mr Pearl's signature svelte style with ultra fine mesh, crystallized like pavé diamonds with the tiniest Swarovski so small, in fact, that they aren't even available anymore. This corset has recently been on display at the V&A museum in London. I wore this costume for the performance scene in my film noir-inspired episode of CSI titled "A Kiss Before Frying”.
