@kevinmiyazaki captured this view from @amtrak’s California Zephyr, east of Truckee, California, while en route to San Francisco. Last summer, the writer @ninaburleigh reserved a sleeper car and roomette (a closet-size room with 2 seats that fold down to beds) on the train to take her family from Chicago to San Francisco. Her goal: to live out a fond childhood memory. In the summer of 1967 — the Summer of Love — @ninaburleigh’s parents moved their family to San Francisco. “That 3-day trip on the passenger train ... was imprinted in my mind,” @ninaburleigh writes in @nytimestravel. She continues: “I was entranced. Who had built those lonely little farmhouses in Nebraska and who lived there? Was that a real cowboy on a horse in the desert? What was it like to fish with just a dog for company beside a log shack in the mountains?” Nearly 5 decades later, she wanted to give her own children their own version of the memory: the American continent unspooling in real time for 72 hours, at eye level.
