Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety This image was captured on one of those days where the weather had started out nice but then had rapidly deteriorated. My intended photographic subject for the day was the local mute swans but as they were up the other side of the lake I instead had some greylag geese for company. When one of them started bathing not far away I watched it through my camera but a combination of a distracting background, the dull, flat light and the effect that exactly the wrong type of wind has on the surface of the water meant that it was an image that I simply knew that I’d never get around to processing. Nevertheless I half-heartedly fired off a single shot and on reviewing the image my suspicions were confirmed. Delete! With little to lose I decided to try some slow exposure images which, if they work can have a transformative effect on an image. The problem of course is that shooting at a very slow shutter speed, thereby allowing for the camera to record a lot more of the subjects’ movement always means that the number of successful images is massively reduced but with nothing to lose it was an option worth exploring. My main intention was to reveal the motion in both the wings and in the water droplets whilst trying to keep the head and eye of the goose as sharp as possible. Of the images that I captured during the brief window of opportunity this one was by far the most successful. To all of the keen amateurs and aspiring professionals out there I hope that this image is a illustrates the importance of always remaining flexible in your thinking and to strive to produce the very best work that you can in any given situation, even when it seems like things beyond your control are conspiring against you.
