Photo by @bethjwald/@thephotosociety // A pair of Plumbeous #Ibis (Theristicus caerulescens) or “Bandurria Mora”, sit on a dead tree in the Esteros del #Iber - sometimes called “the Argentine Pantanal,” Iberá is one of the planet’s great freshwater #wetlands, covering more than 3.2 million acres of grasslands and marsh in #Corrientes Province of northeastern Argentina. The Conservation Land Trust (CLT) , founded by wildlands philanthropists Kris and Doug #Tompkins has worked since 1990 in the Esteros, acquiring and restoring vast tracts of the grass and wetlands with the goal of donating the land to Argentina to create the country’s largest national park; CLT is also restoring all the extirpated fauna in what is the largest re-widling project in the Americas. On September 1st, the provincial legislature in Corrientes gave jurisdiction to the Argentinean nation over the 341,000 acres of lands owned by CLT – this major milestone clears the way for the Argentinean legislature to create Iberá National Park from the CLT lands. When created and combined with the existent and adjacent provincial park, Ibera will be the largest #conservation park in Argentina, covering over 1.6 M acres of wetlands, grasslands and forests.
