What better way to celebrate #nationalwildlifeday than with a new baby ? @dswt ?Meet newborn #Gawa!

At the break of dawn yesterday, our Keepers were surprised to find #DSWT graduate orphan #Galana standing outside the stockades — with her newborn in tow! She had given birth just a few hours earlier, and headed right to our Ithumba Unit to introduce us to her new calf. Wild and orphaned elephants alike were beyond thrilled to meet the new arrival, trumpeting and charging around in celebration. Galana will have lots of eager nannies to help her mother her little baby. #Gawa's name — which means "share" in Swahili — seemed fitting given how our graduate orphans always love to share the joy of a new birth with us.
Seeing an orphaned elephant flourish in our care, graduate to the wild, and then have a wild-born baby is testament to the success of the Orphans' Project. Those of you who support our work are making these next generations of elephants possible — and for that, we thank you!
