The results from the #GreatElephantCensus are in, and they're alarming: Just 352,271 savannah elephants remain in the African countries surveyed.

The Great Elephant Census offers concrete proof of the devastating effects of poaching. Conducted over the past two years, 90 scientists were flown across sub-Saharan Africa (flying the equivalent of the distance to the moon and a quarter of the way back) to count elephant populations. The findings — among them, that the current rate of decline is 8% per year, primarily due to poaching — shed light on a crisis that the world can't ignore.

There are pockets of hope. In Tsavo National Park, our #DSWT operations with the @kenyawildlifeservice have seen a marked decline in poaching. This success demonstrates how boots on the ground, supported by eyes in the sky, can save elephants. With increased resources and a concerted global effort, we can still turn the tide.
