Photo by @FransLanting Not yet ready to fly, a young albatross stands against a blazing sunset on a beach on Hawaii’s Midway Atoll, along with dozens of others of his generation. His baroque hairdo of baby down shows that he’s not fully fledged—but soon this gawky-looking youngster will become a real seabird and take off into the great blue beyond. Millions of albatrosses crowd the beaches of Hawaii’s Leeward Islands before their summer exodus each year—one of the most amazing phenomenons I have witnessed. Last week President Obama elevated the importance of this remote arc of islands and atolls spangling the north-central Pacific Ocean by vastly expanding the protection of their surrounding waters. The Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument now encompasses an area of 582,000 square miles of ocean around the Leeward Islands, making this the largest protected area in the world. Mahalo, Obama!
