Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Images like this can never be planned, they can only ever be reacted to as and when the necessary serendipitous events conspire together. This image is of course pure luck. I just happened to be sitting in the right spot, at the right time and with the right lens. The moment was exactly that, a brief moment where three gannets in the absolute chaos of a gannet colony all happened to look in the same direction at the same time. There was of course a fair amount of effort in the pursuit of such lucky moments however but I’d be dishonest if I were to claim that this image was in any way preconceived. It was captured whilst #onassignment for @natgeo, a project that saw me camping for three months on the northernmost tip of the Shetland Islands, on top of the cliffs overlooking the island of Muckle Flugga. The gannet colony was incredibly inaccessible and on this day I’d been taken down a perilous descent of the cliffs by the warden at the time, a friend of mine called Alastair Wilson. He’d warned me never to attempt the treacherous ascent/descent in the wet and on this day, my first day down at the base of the cliffs, Alastair had to leave to walk the three miles back to where we’d parked, and where the wardens’ house was. In the distance I could see ominous brooding skies, dark and foreboding and the whole time that I was shooting I felt extremely apprehensive. If I’m being honest, it wasn’t my most enjoyable time with the camera, knowing that at some point I’d have to climb back up alone, especially as I’d just seen Alastair, with all of his knowledge and experience, take a wrong turn and get himself in a fair bit of bother. There has never been a time before or since where I was working under quite such anxiety and so it’s perculiarly ironic that in the chaos of the gannet colony, and the growing panic in my own mind that I’ve ended up with an image of relative calm.
