It was a portfolio of 30 photos that changed the face of Americas wilderness forever. In 1861 the only thing on people's minds was the Civil War but across the country photographer Carleton Watkins was lugging thousands of pounds of camera gear on mule through the Sierra wilderness.

These photographs eventually made it to Abraham Lincoln. It's been said these were the inspiration for the Yosemite Grant Act in 1864 & later our National Parks. This story constantly inspires me to pick up a camera everyday, because even amidst times of turmoil there is always a need for the inspiration that nature brings. #nps100
