Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety A fox cub appears from behind the tail/brush of its larger sibling. Though I’ve photographed foxes on a number of different occasions I’ve only ever photographed them over a sustained period twice. On the first occasion I spotted an active fox earth as I was driving to my badger site and, whilst I was able to set up a hide the fox cubs were already well grown and approaching adolescence. This meant that I was only able to spend a relatively short amount of time with them, securing just a handful of images. The next occasion was due less to serendipity and more to good planning and fieldwork as I was able to find an active fox earth much earlier in the year, when the cubs were much smaller and only just starting to explore the world outside their earth. I’ll never forget the sense of excitement, not only when I discovered the tell-tale signs of an active earth but as I waited hopefully in my hide that first evening, only for 7 fox cubs to appear over the course of about 30 minutes. Even then though I was immediately extremely cautious, both recognising what a fantastic opportunity this could potentially be but also being incredibly mindful not to move the hide in too quickly. If the vixen became uncomfortable at any point then she would simply move the cubs to a new earth and I’d never have seen them again. Nevertheless, my cautious and respectful approach paid off and it was fascinating for me to be able to spend a significant amount of time watching them grow, seeing the subtle differences in their appearance, their characteristics and particularly their size. The females in particular were much smaller than their over confident and boisterous brothers but their bond was strong and the brothers were always very attentive to their smaller siblings. In this image one of the smaller females appears from behind her brothers tail.
