Ever wanted to learn how to walk on glass, breathe fire, stick your tongue in a mousetrap or lie on a bed of nails? Step right up: The Coney Island Sideshow School begins today. The first sideshow in #ConeyIsland opened in 1880, but the shows’ heyday began in 1904, when a revamped Coney Island opened with “Dwarf City” (reported pop. 300). Today, the Coney Island Circus Sideshow is one of the last of its kind in the U.S. Among the acts: a bone breaker, a sword swallower, a fire eater and a yo-yo master. For those hoping to run away to the circus, tuition is $1000. “Sideshow acts are not magic tricks; they’re the real deal,” said Adam Rinn, the dean of the Sideshow School. “So gulping down a sword for the first time can be scary.” The school’s philosophy, he said: “Be careful.” @samuelhodgson photographed Nola Star performing a fire-eating act at the show last week. #?
