‘Until I visited the city of #Manisa in Turkey’s North Aegean region, I had no idea of the important role it had played in the lives of the Ottoman sultans. In fact, this is where the şehzades (crown princes) were sent to be educated and prepared for their future role. Although the palaces and gardens where the princes and their entourages lived no longer exist, three 16th-century mosques built by order of the sultans have survived, including this one, the #muradiyecamii. Commissioned by Murad III and built between 1583-1586, it was designed by the Ottoman Empire’s most famous architects, Mimar Sinan and its exquisite interior decoration was overseen by Sedefkar Mehmet Ağa, who also designed the famous Blue Mosque in #İstanbul.
