Photo by: Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | Now peaceful, this wood-lined French WWI trench doesn’t convey the indescribable horror of modern mass destruction which the young men who once stood here, and in hundreds of miles of trenches just like this, actually experienced. At the battle of the Somme, nearly a quarter of a million high power explosive shells were fired by the British against the Germans in the first hour…a rate of about 4,000 shells per minute. The shells were so powerful that when each one struck, any human being that happened to be nearby would simply disappear, their bodies literally vaporized by the power of the explosion. The surface of the earth became uninhabitable. Underground shelters were the only place where these high tech weapons could not penetrate. The British thought that a quarter of a million shells fired against the Germans in a single hour would have decimated the Germans and made the British advance a cake walk. But the Germans had gone underground. Unbeknownst to the British, the Germans who were relatively unscathed by the massive British artillery attack, were waiting for them. When the British confidently advanced towards the German lines, they marched into a wholesale slaughter of tens of thousands of British young men in a matter of hours. WWI is a story of hubris about modern technology and illusions of invincibility. Leaders on both sides lead their societies into a meat grinder of mass killing…and the nations on both sides followed them with genuine enthusiasm into the abyss.
