Photo by @rezaphotography // Rebellious souls // #Afghanistan, Khwadja Bahauddin I had come to shoot a film about Afghanistan and Massoud. He was cornered by the Taliban but was resisting despite the odds. Refugees were flooding in from everywhere to escape from life under the yoke of the Taliban and suffering their barbaric acts. Whole families had walked for days and nights. However, the health and humanitarian conditions where appalling. Massoud could only offer them security and freedom; he fought for them relentlessly. It was to be the last time I would see him in Afghanistan. The following year, he was assassinated on the other side of the wall on which I leant to take the portrait of this young “rebellious soul.” She was ten, maybe twelve years old. They had escaped the Taliban, who had taken control of their village with their violence and their bans. They had walked for days, mostly at night, to reach the northern enclave - free land defended by Commander Massoud and his men. Their mother followed her father. He had told them it was the only place to be safe. For months now, we had lived in a tent near a river like many other displaced people. It was difficult for them, but they had no choice. There was no home, no doctor, and little food, but at least, they could survive. That's the common destiny of refugee all around the world. Text by Rachel Deghati.
