(2/3- they're out of order bc I fucked up) This inspiring documentary (link in bio) is about a new shero of mine named #AnneBraden . She would have had her birthday last weekend and was a white civil rights activist praised by MLK in his famous "Letter From Birmingham Jail". She continued to fight against racism until the day she died. These few clips are about the distorted legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that too few of us white folks understand when we quote him. I believe the way in which we are taught about MLK offers many of us white folks comfort in thinking that we do not have to be disruptive or controversial in fighting racism. But the truth is, racism still persists, and we STILL have to take on positions that are uncomfortable and risky in order to change the status quo. The image of MLK that most of us learn is one that suggests that even today, we do not have to "rock the boat" of the status quo in order to have an affect or that #BlackLivesMatter is "too aggressive" in their tactics. In his day, the civil rights activists were often considered communists and traitors and in our day, the #BlackLivesMatter groups are accused of being divisive and encouraging violence (they do not).
