(3/3) #AllLivesMatter people, THIS is your legacy. I know it may not FEEL racist when you say "All Lives Matter" as a response to #BlackLivesMatter , but it also didn't feel racist to many white people to oppose the desegregation of schools at the time when they were becoming integrated. Even most of the white ALM people these days would probably agree that segregation was wrong, but at the time MANY white folks did not. It's important to examine what the issues are of OUR time so that when we look back 50 years from now, we won't have wished we had the foresight to see beyond our own time. Don't be on the wrong side of history. This inspiring documentary (link in bio) is about a new shero of mine named #AnneBraden . She would have had her birthday last weekend and was a white civil rights activist praised by MLK in his famous "Letter From Birmingham Jail". She continued to fight against racism until the day she died. These few clips are about the distorted legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that too few of us white folks understand when we quote him. I believe the way in which we are taught about MLK offers many of us white folks comfort in thinking that we do not have to be disruptive or controversial in fighting racism. But the truth is, racism still persists, and we STILL have to take on positions that are uncomfortable and risky in order to change the status quo. The image of MLK that most of us learn is one that suggests that even today, we do not have to "rock the boat" of the status quo in order to have an affect or that #BlackLivesMatter is "too aggressive" in their tactics. In his day, the civil rights activists were often considered communists and traitors and in our day, the #BlackLivesMatter groups are accused of being divisive and encouraging violence (they do not). I highly suggest that white folks watch this fascinating and inspiring documentary (link in bio). https://www.appalshop.org/media/anne-braden-southern-patriot/
