A few months ago, I had the immense pleasure of working with an organization called #TheUnusualSuspects Theatre Company (theunusualsuspects.org) . @kendrick38 , @racheldoesstuff and a number of other talented performers came together to do a play reading written by the amazing minds of the incarcerated youth at the juvenile detention facility, Camp David Gonzalez. The Unusual Suspects brings theatre arts to "at-risk teens" and in their own words, "For over 20 years, The Unusual Suspects has responded to the systemic challenges facing Los Angeles’ youth. The Unusual Suspects participants break patterns of recidivism, gang activity and violence, and go on to be graduates, dreamers, leaders and mentors who are engaged in and give back to their communities." In the words of the young playwrights, "When I used to live in the streets, I was taught to have no emotions and not trust anybody. It was different here. I never really knew that there were people in the world that care about other people." And "What I've learned from this group is to say 'Yes, And...' - It taught me to be more open minded, to let people speak before commenting, and to see to the end before giving my opinion."
