Photo by: Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | One hundred years ago, the world discovered, for the first time, that the very same technologies that make modern life efficient, exciting and powerful have a dark side which can destroy civilization on a scale that’s beyond anything we can possibly conceive of or even imagine. Near this spot outside of Verdun, France between 750,000 and a million men were killed or injured in a span of months. It was killing on an industrial scale like the world had never seen before. WWI was caused by the failure to see how the dehumanizing affects of modern life can lead to barbarism. Once the inhuman scale of modern life was allowed to reign, the Genie of modern mass destruction came out of the bottle and destroyed everything in sight. It was like science fiction but it really happened. If we place blind faith in modern technology without maintaining human control…we’re toast. That’s the lesson of WWI.
