In July, we were hiking four weeks in Sweden’s largest national park, Padjelanta, and before we return for another three weeks tomorrow, we wanted to send out a short update.
Padjelanta (Badjelánnda) means “high land” — it is an area characterized by rolling green mountains where three Sami villages (sameby) move their reindeer to graze in the summer season. We were photographing the season’s most important event for the Sami reindeer herders, the calf-marking. The Sami gather their reindeer in small fenced areas, catch the calves with a snare and cut their ears in order to recognize them after they separate from their mothers.
