A puffin, with its wonderfully expressive face, is stoic during a torrential downpour. Whilst working #onassignment for my @ナショナルジオグラフィック story on Northern gannets I spent a huge amount of time at the base of the towering 150m cliffs for which Hermaness National Nature Reserve, on Unst in the Shetland islands, is famous. The presence of puffins was irregular but when they did come in I would often spend a little bit of time with them as they are so enjoyable to be around, so full of character and charm. I had been sitting close to this one for some time but the resulting images felt a little average, a bit too straightforward and familiar, like they were lacking something. It was then with a sense of relief that the rains started, and then proceeded to quickly get heavier and heavier. The effect on the image was immediate, the puffins plumage became bejewelled with water droplets whilst a slow shutter speed allowed me to reveal the full extent of the falling rain. It is my intension to spend a significant part of next summer working with these adorable birds, in a few different locations and I intend to lead a photographic trip to Shetland next July for that very purpose.
