Entire families lived there. Toddlers took their first steps and played their first games in this filthy world, amidst its clinging and unbearable smell. As soon as they are old enough to carry loads, they stalk the unending procession of garbage trucks arriving from the city, full of garbage to some, a livelihood to others. As the skips rise to unload their refuse, the children, armed with large sacks, surge forth in an attempt to recover anything they can resell for recycling, as they search for their family’s next meal. The first illnesses they fall victim to are skin diseases and eye infections. What a strange view of the world! A mountain of waste from a faraway city, a life which is not their own, and which undoubtedly never will be. This refuse is the waste our consumer societies produce, a reflection of what we consume.
