Photo by Michael George @migeophoto // Words by Fran Tirado @fransquishco // In the 1990s, the activists at Queer Nation started their work with LGBT visibility, forcibly outing public figures and protesting in open air while calling action to the HIV/AIDS crisis. Their chants and slogans were a constitutive part of their work, one of which was “We're here, we're queer, get used to it!” Another, “Out of the closets and into the streets.” The reasons to protest in our country right now are abundant, and the reasons to celebrate are far and few between. On June 12, 2016, 49 people were shot and killed because of the color of their skin, because of who they loved. Two weeks later, New York was forced to celebrate in the wake of this tragedy despite how unsafe our streets felt after June 12. We wanted to give the city its voice by creating a reminder that living queer in public is such a gift. That now, more than ever, we must go into the streets, in loving memory of the ones we lost, in the triumph, in crop-tops and glittered eyes, finding a reason, in spite of it all, to be joyful.
