“I compete in a sport that is decided by one one-hundredth of a second,” said Allyson Felix (@af85), bottom, pictured here with @joannadhayes, who won a 2004 Olympic gold medal in the 100-meter hurdles. “It’s difficult to be in a sport that measures you that way. Joanna was very transparent about what it took to get the gold medal. She was always going above what the standard was; I saw that, no matter what, I always have to push harder.” Allyson, 30, is heading to @リオ五輪2016 for track and field — her 4th trip to the Olympic Games, where she has won 6 medals in previous years. When @nytmag asked to name a former Olympian who inspired her, her answer was @joannadhayes. “When I was younger, I thought hurdling was completely crazy,” said @joannadhayes, 39. “You fall all the time! I clipped 3 hurdles in a race in Athens, but I was able to keep going. It’s just like in life: Make the right choice, don’t mess this up.” To see more of @erikmadiganheck’s portraits of @teamusa athletes, visit the link in our profile.
