“Getting to the point of a positive pregnancy test for our female Bornean orangutan, Batang, took a lot of patience, problem-solving, and dedication from our primate team. They tracked Batang’s ovulation to pinpoint the best time to put them together for breeding. Keeper Amanda Bania and veterinarians Cindie Erikson and Katharine Hope worked together, training Batang to voluntarily participate in ultrasounds. We were rewarded when clear images of the infant appeared. It took two years, but our team always remained hopeful and optimistic.
