The Stowe House sale, 15 August-7 Oct 1848. Frontispiece from sale catalogue, artist unknown. Stowe House in Buckinghamshire, England was the family home of the Dukes of Buckingham. Today it is a school. The 2nd Duke of Buckingham and Chandos found himself in debt and almost bankrupt. The sale took place over 40 days with over 5,300 lots coming under the hammer.
