Photograph by andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety My diary is clear for next Spring. I have already spoken to a friendly local farmer, an owner of significant amounts of land around our village about where he has seen foxes this year and I know myself of a number of areas that I think would be ideal for fox earths, and photography. I also know of at least 10 historical fox earths, places where they have denned in the past but photographing fox cubs is never easy. First priority is the light and the topography of the ground. I generally prefer evening sites, not just because getting up at 2.30am sucks but because arriving in the dark makes it much more likely that the dog or vixen will be nearby and will give an alarm bark. When that happens I’ll not return to the den site for a couple of days. At afternoon sites I can arrive intentionally noisily. With the cubs tucked up safely underground the parents have no need to alarm bark and if they are around then they will just slip away, unnoticed. I can then get in to the hide and begin the wait, usually using the time to catch up on some reading. My other priority is to try and find a site where I can set up a couple of different hides so I can work whatever the wind direction. With this image of a young cub the wind direction was never a problem as mum/dad hadn’t yet taught them about the dangers associated with human scent. That all changed on one very specific day and from that point on the wind direction was critically important. Much like with badgers however my nemesis is always the swirling wind, one that constantly changes direction and when happens it’s always time to pack up and leave. I feel reasonably confident of being successful next year, it’s been a couple of years since I last worked with fox cubs but as of Feb/March 2017 project fox is on!
