The images were published in National Geographic—and they also led to an unusual collaboration with composer Philip Glass and music director and conductor Marin Alsop to produce LIFE as a symphony. The symphony premiered in Santa Cruz, California, in 2006 and has traveled the world since then. It will be performed again on July 20, 2016, in a free concert at Chicago’s Grant Park Music Festival. This video clip from the second movement celebrates life emerging in the sea. The next clip @FransLanting leads up to the appearance of horseshoe crabs.
