Photo by @FransLanting The desert spadefoot toad of central Australia can survive without water for years. It burrows into the ground, secretes a membrane around itself, and goes into the deep sleep of aestivation. But it only takes one rainstorm to wake it up. I photographed this frog as it broke the surface of a patch of wet sand and resumed life. This image is featured in my project “LIFE: A Journey Through Time," which Chris Eckstrom, my wife and partner, and I produced as a book, a traveling exhibition, and as a multimedia symphony that features my imagery and the music of Philip Glass. The LIFE symphony will be performed in a free concert at the Grant Park Music Festival in Chicago on July 20, 2016. For those of you who can’t be there, I have posted some video clips from the symphony at @FransLanting.
