First-time mothers sometimes need help learning how to care for offspring, so keepers want to expose our Bornean orangutan, Batang, to the experiences of motherhood prior to her baby’s arrival. They gave her a “fake baby” and trained Batang hold it upright, carry it around the enclosure, present it for bottle-feedings, and give it to keepers when asked through a specially-designed mesh “baby box.” That way, if keepers needed to evaluate a real baby, this training would help them retrieve the infant safely. ‪#‎OrangutanStory
