Six years ago, Bornean orangutans Batang and Kyle received a breeding recommendation from the Species Survival Plan. Why did we wait? Batang needed a bit more time to mature socially and show animal care staff she was ready for primate parenthood! In 2014, she came off of birth control, and keepers tracked Batang’s ovulation cycle by monitoring her urine. Batang enjoys spending time with all of the Zoo’s orangutans, so, this way, keepers could make the most of her alone time with Kyle. #OrangutanStory #WeSaveSpecies
