This post is in honor of Ryder's birthday today. ? His parents were talked out of the humane alternatives by a longtime @avmavets /AAFP vet at an AAHA hospital & he & his 2 siblings were declawed. All 3 cats have had parts or all of their paws amputated because of horrific complications from their declaws. The vet took a fun European vacation after & his insurance is paying for their $100,000 veterinary bills.
An important declawing study was published in Jan.in JAVMA. Here are some of the findings that the pro-declaw vets don't want you to believe or see.
1) The percentage of cats that are declawed in America hasn’t changed even though there is more education and awareness.
2) When declawing is done with spay/neuter the cats were more likely to have postoperative complications than were cats that underwent either procedure alone.

3) A high % of owners reported pain, complications, and behavioral changes in their cats. Yet the AVMA didn’t add any of this info to their declawing position and the NYSVMS didn’t present this info to the legislators in NY. They only presented their declawing propaganda that supported their desires to keep declawing legal so they could keep amputating kitty toes.
4) Veterinarians and cat owners declaw cats even though it is very painful for the cats.
5) Both long & short term complications & behavioral issues were confirmed in these studies. Owners have also reported long-term behavioral changes following declawing such as house soiling & an increased resistance to allowing the paws to be handled or an increased incidence or severity of biting, compared with behavior before the procedure.
6) There is clear evidence of pain & postoperative complications with declawing no matter how it is performed!
