Road to Nowhere. Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa but is politically a part of Spain. The island's name is either derived from the French term for "great adventure" or the Spanish for "strong winds." While it is a popular tourist destination, it has so far managed to avoid overdevelopment and retains much its natural beauty.
