While I was doing a reportage on the region around the Caspian Sea for National Geographic Magazine, my eyes were drawn to this scene. This couple on a swing provides another type of information, more on a sociological level. The two adolescents in the foreground, in movement and slightly blurred, contrast with the dismal low-income housing building of the Soviet era in the town of Aktau in Kazakhstan. The aura of insouciance created by the human presence here lends a feeling of immensity. The two parallel lines formed by the swings invite our gaze towards the infinite. They are accentuated by the parallels formed by the legs of the boy and girl and cut the highly geometric harmony of the lines in the background. The dynamic quality of this photograph lies in this contrast between the fixed elements and those in movement, between massiveness and the quality of lightness. In all three cases, the human presence provides an essential balance to the image and imbues it with mystery.
