Photo by Michael George @migeophoto // Drayton Hall, along with the many other plantation houses in South Carolina, has a long, dark, and complicated history. Touring through the mansion, which has been emptied of any furnishings, you can feel the ghosts heavy in the air. As we walked, a storm brewed and thunder rumbled as the humidity caused sweat to drip from my brow. We learned that prior to colonization, the land was home to the Kiawah Native American tribe. When the South Carolina colony pushed out the natives, John Drayton built this Palladian mansion in the late 1730’s. In another takeover, during the American Revolutionary War, the property was usurped by a British commander, and several thousand troops encamped on the grounds. Fast forward to 2016: Visitors like myself walk the halls to be reminded of the contradictions of slavery and freedom that this nation was built on. // #draytonhall #discoversc #explorecharleston @discoversc
