This large carving by French WWI soldiers located in an out-of-the-way section of a large underground city pokes fun at an important French military leader, General Joffre, and his alleged mistress. In the background, light streams through a ventilation shaft connecting the underground to the surface. Ventilation shafts were a hazard because poison gas and hand grenades could be dropped by the enemy into the underground city wreaking death and destruction without warning.
