85 years ago this week, the @Empire State Building formally opened as the world’s tallest structure. That day, hundreds of “prominent New Yorkers” joined President Hoover on the 86th floor, where “few failed to exclaim at the smallness of man and his handiworks as seen from this great distance,” @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reported. 31 years later, our staff photographer Jack Manning took this photo of a man painting the side of the @Empire State Building, just above the 86th-floor observation deck. The crew working on the project, which took about 5 months, was made up of “the sort of men who do not bobble at heights,” @ニューヨーク・タイムズ wrote alongside the small photo essay, “as these pictures clearly show.” #tbt #livelymorgue
