According to the ancient legend, Rome was founded on the banks of the Tiber River, where the mythical founders of the city were rescued and suckled by a she-wolf. Today, the filthy waterfront and murky waters of the Tiber are a painful reflection of the widespread neglect that has blemished Rome’s beauty. Despite decades of promises by city officials to clean up the river’s banks, joggers and cyclists using riverfront walkways still have to dodge litter and overgrown vegetation. Faced with the city’s inaction, several associations of do-gooders have taken matters into their own hands. Members of one group, Retake Rome, have engaged in a collective quest to rid the city’s streets of litter, layers of advertising stickers and the graffiti that can be found scrawled on thousands of palazzos. The rallying cry for the group: “Wake Up, Clean Up, Speak Up.” Nadia Shira Cohen captured this scene under Ponte Sisto bridge on the Tiber River.
