The traditional growing of grain (wheat, corn, rice) is a millennial one in Egypt and exists alongside cash crops (such as sugar cane and cotton mostly), thanks to an irrigation system independent from the seasonal flooding of the Nile.
I was on assignment on the Nile Delta for National Geographic Magazine.
I spent hours under an overpowering sun, observing the silent dance of the workers reaping the wheat, making heavy sheaves to be stored. One could only hear the scraping sounds of the ears of wheat turned golden, giving a certain rhythm to their work.
Here, the farmers’ hands were steadily cutting the stalks.
There, an Egyptian peasant was harvesting a field of grain with a sickle.
The noble strength of these hard-working farmers has always inspired me deep respect.
They are taking care of our land, of our home.
