This may just be the most important class I've ever filmed for @oneoeight.tv - Lower Back Love❤️ I've suffered from back pain my entire life; it's what brought me to yoga. I have scoliosis and suffered through a car accident and a white water rafting accident that both caused me overwhelming lower back pain for many years. There were days I couldn't get out of bed because of the pain and I was always hesitant to work out or move my body out of the fear of "throwing my back out" (something that happened often). When I first started practicing yoga I was lucky to come across a very healing, restorative practice. My first two years on the yoga mat were slow and steady; I had to be patient to get to know my body and figure out what didn't work (forward bends, deep twists, side bends) and what actually made me feel better (hamstring stretches, hip openers, gentle core work). There were no handstands, no chaturangas, no arm balances involved. My nemesis for years was Triangle Pose! I spent a long time learning how to listen to my body before the thought of anything remotely advanced ever entered my mind. Little by little I was able to heal my back and from there my practice grew more dynamic. If I would have thrown myself into an intense Vinyasa practice I most likely would have ended up worsening the pain and giving up before I had even started! So much of what we do in yoga is amazing, but not everything works for everyone. Many of us suffer from back pain and though yoga can be a great tool to help, it can also worsen your lower back sensitivity if practiced in a way that isn't mindful. In this class⬆️ we’ll get into anatomy and talk about where your lower back pain may stem from, as well as work though some very important variations and modifications of poses to keep your lower back safe during your yoga practice.
