The reality of high tech mass destruction on an incomprehensible scale made War WWI a living hell... like a frightening science fiction movie that was real. The aesthetics of modern mass destruction often have a Star Wars like quality as seen in this machine gun post guarding the perimeter of a large WWI fort on the Verdun battlefield in France.
