Over the years following the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, an estimated 800,000 workers, known as liquidators, were involved in the cleanup following the accident. Many were brought in from distant regions of the former Soviet Union. As the settlements were too contaminated for housing the liquidators, many lived in tents, or on ships that anchored on the Pripyat River in Chernobyl. Contaminated and rusting away, the ships now are waiting to be dismantled.
With the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster approaching on April 26, you can learn more about the accident and its aftermath from my iPad app, “The Long Shadow of Chernobyl,” available here: https://itunes.apple.com/app/the-long-shadow-of-chernobyl/id484752718
