As farmers let their fields go fallow in order to sell water to nearby towns, there is now limited agricultural runoff feeding into California's long-troubled Salton Sea. This decrease in the water supply is exacerbated by the current extreme drought conditions in California, leading to serious concerns about the lake's increasing salinity.
The number of tilapia (and other fish) in the Salton Sea has significantly decreased in the late 1990s due to oxygen-depleted waters. Massive fish die-offs struck for years with an estimate of 7 million fish dying on a single hot day in August of 1999. Lesser die-offs continue to occur every year.

I’m excited to return to the Salton Sea next week with my workshop students for “The Art of Storytelling - The Salton Sea.” Two spots opened up at the last minute - information here: http://www.gerdludwig.com/?p=4298
