Mahendra Peiris in front of his @RainforestAlliance biodiversity training posters. There weren’t names in Tamil for all the species here so he invented new words the farmers would connect to (e.g. giving a red bird the same name as the red paint used on the 3rd eye).
Spending a day with him is like being with a favorite professor, his curiosity is infectious and I find myself asking questions about “integrated weed management.”
At the tea farm he asks us if we see a difference between two plots. “That one looks more lush,” I observe, “and more green at the bottom.” “Yes,” he’s nodding, “that is the good weed patch, it’s much healthier!”
Later, he gives me an essay he’s written for a sustainability journal on loss of local biodiversity. Peppered with photos he's taken of local wild animals, he explains the destructive combination of herbicides, tourism, colonialism, and forced migration. I'm a student in awe -- how brilliant is his ability to pull together so many complex systems and histories into one succinct powerful paper.
