We leave for the rainforest at 6am. I don’t know what to expect. I’m new to learning about the degredation of our planet, and even the basics make me feel totally off kilter. I just read that we've killed roughly half of the world's non-human animal population since 1970 and we’ve destroyed half the world’s forests. I learn that if we keep up this rate of deforestation half of what we have now will be gone in just nine years, and there will be nothing left by 2060. Nothing left? I’ll be 73! It astounds me that so much dying has happened over the course of my lifetime but to me it was totally unobservable. Ok, I’ve always lived in cities, but this is – literally – an earth shattering transformation. It’s like I don’t speak the language of my own planet. I’m not someone who hikes or camps or (until this spring) even gardens. I moved this year from a studio apartment to a brownstone with a yard, and for the first time in a decade I put my hand into the dirt and was immediately overcome. I realize I haven’t even seen, or held, so much as an earthworm since grade school. Now I’ve planted rows of dry little desiccated looking seeds that actually grow! It is the first time in my adult life that I am reminded of what actually sustains us. (Surprise, it’s not money.) I hope you’ll follow along as I tell #MyForestStory, and if you like, join in by breaking your daily routine to plant a seed, take a hike, read about the forest, and reflect and share what you learn. #RainforestAlliance #PushForProgress #SriLanka
