Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | Five years ago when I began photographing the Hidden World of WWI, if someone had told me how much live ammunition is still lying around, I would not have taken them seriously. This live trench mortar shell has been lying on this spot in a remote forest in the mountains of Southern Alsace since it fell there about a hundred years. These remnants of the world’s first modern mass destruction tell us a lot about ourselves and the fragility of our world. For all the indispensable benefits of modern technology, what keeps our world safe and civilized comes not from machines but from our individual humanity and the core of human decency that resides within most people. We saw this on 9/11 when complete strangers ran headlong into danger, without a moment’s hesitation, to save another human being from peril. I see it at the bedside as a practicing emergency physician where in moments of crisis, all we have in this world is each other.
