Local women in the drought-prone Marwar region of Rajasthan, celebrate the creation of a Jal Sabha, or water-users association, in their village. For as long as any of them can remember, they've had to walk two to three kilometers each day to find sufficient water, or pay unaffordable rates to have it delivered. Now with help from the Jal Bhagirathi Foundation, a local non-profit working on water issues in the region, they plan to re-dig their ancient talab, or village pond, and use traditional water harvesting techniques and community-wide conservation efforts to ensure a steady supply of water throughout the year--a cause for celebration, indeed.

Some 4 billion people--two-thirds of the population--live in regions that are severely water-stressed. As we celebrate the International Day of Happiness this Sunday (3/20) and World Water Day this Tuesday (3/22), let's remember that clean, potable water is a vital key to happiness.
