Photo: @bethjwald /@thephotosociety This is a photo from this time last year when I was working on several assignments in Chilean and Argentine #Patagonia. In this shot, #puppies are taught to bond with #sheep that they are raised to guard by having them #nurse on lactating #ewes- the puppies are taken from their mothers when young and raised with sheep. They are a mix of Great Pyrenees and similar breeds used for centuries to guard sheep in Europe; a number of sheep #estancias or ranches in #Patagonia are starting to use the dogs to prevent predation by pumas or mountain lions. The puppies here are part of a pilot project run by Conservación Patagonica, a wildlands conservation non-profit, to convince local ranchers in the #Aysn Region to start to use the dogs to protect their herds, instead of killing the pumas (which are protected in #Chile but are still often killed by ranchers) In the photo, Conservation Director for CP, Cristián Saucedo, his sons and assistant help the puppies get their evening meal, on the future Patagonia National Park in Valle Chacabuco, Chilean Patagonia. @conservacionpatagonica #greatpyrenees #friendship #bonding #patagoniapark #parquepatagonia #regionaysen #conservation #southamerica #nikon #onassignment
