Happy birthday to photographer #HiroshiSugimoto, whose works blur distinctions between the real and the fictive. Favoring black-and-white, Sugimoto has continued to use the same camera throughout his career—a turn-of-the-century box camera. Sugimoto uses an exposure determined by the length of the film screening in order to photograph drive-ins, golden-age cinema palaces, and modern movie houses, as seen in his "South Bay Drive-In, San Diego," 1993. As each frame of film flickers by, the shifting action and light both cancels and accumulates until the film, shown in its entirety, is recorded as a bright, blank screen, appearing empty of imagery while actually filled to overflowing. Sugimoto calls this “time exposed”—the collecting, in one still image, of moments passed. Learn more at guggenheim.org/collection. © Hiroshi Sugimoto ?
