#OnThisDay in 2000, Sir Stanley Matthews died, aged 85. Often regarded as one of the greatest players of the English game, he is the only player to have been knighted while still playing, as well as being the first winner of the European Footballer of the Year. Known as 'The Wizard of Dribble' or ‘The Magician’, Sir Stan's professional career covered some 33 years. When he retired in 1965, aged 50, he had made nearly 700 League appearances for Stoke City and Blackpool. Between 1934 and 1957 he won 54 caps for England, playing in the FIFA World Cup in 1950 and 1954.
