Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | Soldier’s dining area on the German side of Butte de Vauquois. For nearly four years, French and German forces fought to dominate this strategic hilltop that overlooks a key supply route to Verdun. Unlike any other place I’ve encountered on the Western Front, a huge network of tunnels were dug during the war that served as both living and working spaces and for offensive purposes to place high explosives under the opposing army’s front line. Most WWI tunnels were merely crawl spaces and were nothing like the large underground cities that I’ve found in many other places along the former Western Front. But Vauquois is the exception. 17 kilometers of tunnels exist on the German side and 7 kilometers on the French side. And many of them were large as tunnels go. I’m 6’ 4” tall and in many places, I can walk upright in these without a problem. crawl spaces and were nothing like the large underground cities that I’ve found in many other places along the former Western Front. On both the German and the French side are small dining areas. There were workshops, limited living quarters for a small number of troops, a small infirmary and pharmacy on the German side and infrastructure including rail, telephones and electric lights. Butte de Vauquois is managed by a wonderful association of volunteers. On a limited basis they make the site open to the public.
